What DYNAM actually does
Dynamic Airspace Mapping (DYNAM) is NOTAMbriefing.com's way of showing whether an airspace is actually active right now — not only whether it exists in published airspace data. It is a live overlay on top of the static European airspace structure that pulls in every operational signal a controller's brief would normally use: NOTAMs, Airspace Use Plans, Updated Use Plans, and the activation schedules baked into national AIPs and supplements.
Open the Paris FIR on a Wednesday afternoon. The published airspace map shows dozens of restricted and danger areas across northern France — on any given hour, only a handful are genuinely active. DYNAM highlights the active ones in bold and dims the rest. One glance, and you know which way to route.
The shorthand: active zones highlighted, inactive ones faded — one glance tells you where you can fly.
Published doesn't always mean active. DYNAM tells you which is which.
Why pilots care: the dim-the-noise problem
European low-level airspace is dense by design. France publishes a thick set of TRAs, TSAs and restricted areas. Germany lays daily military training segments across the Alps. Italy stacks coastal Danger Areas along the Tyrrhenian. On a printed chart they all look the same, every single day. In practice, most of them are inactive at any given hour, and pilots burn cognitive load checking each one.
DYNAM exists to compress that mental work. The published structure stays on the chart for orientation, but the visual hierarchy reflects reality: what's active right now jumps out, and what isn't fades to a quiet outline. If you're planning an IFR leg from EHRD Rotterdam south into EDDS Stuttgart, you don't need to read every restricted-area box across four FIRs — you need to see the handful that matter for your departure slot.
The four-stream source stack
DYNAM is not magic — it is four official data streams cross-referenced and reconciled:
Sources, in order of authority:
- Eurocontrol EAD — the European AIS Database. Every national AIS authority (LVNL, NATS, SIA, skeyes, DFS, Austro Control, ENAV, ENAIRE and more) publishes NOTAMs into EAD within minutes. This is the canonical live source for ad-hoc activations and changes.
- NM B2B (Network Manager Business-to-Business) — the Eurocontrol Network Manager's feed of Airspace Use Plans (AUP) and Updated Use Plans (UUP). This is how military and reserved-airspace activation reaches civil pilots in near real-time. AUP/UUP explained →
- AIP — the national Aeronautical Information Publication. Published activation schedules (e.g. active Mon-Fri 0700-1900 local) come from here. These are baseline rhythms that DYNAM applies even when no NOTAM is in force.
- SUP — AIP Supplements. Country-specific temporary changes (exercise periods, airshow zones, seasonal corridors) that aren't ad-hoc enough to be a NOTAM but aren't permanent either.
A worked example: a Wednesday morning over Champagne
Illustrative scenario: a VFR pilot files LFQA Reims → LFST Strasbourg on a Wednesday morning. The direct line crosses one of the AUP-managed restricted areas over the Champagne region used for French military training.
At pre-flight, DYNAM shows the area as a thin grey outline — the AUP for the day has the activation scheduled for late morning. By the time the pilot is at the aircraft, the outline has thickened to a bold red because the published activation window has started. The popup names the source (an AUP entry, with the activation window in UTC) and the active-until time. The pilot can delay departure until the window closes, fly the published deviation south, or coordinate transit with the controlling agency.
Without DYNAM, the alternatives are either over-routing to avoid all published zones (wasteful) or reading the AUP text on the SIA portal and translating timestamps to a map by hand. DYNAM does that translation continuously, and re-runs it every time a UUP is issued — sometimes hours before the activation window.
What you'll see on the map
DYNAM is a visual layer, not a separate page. When Live mode is on, every airspace polygon on the map carries one of three states:
- Active now — bold border, saturated fill. The popup shows the source (NOTAM ID, AUP entry, or AIP schedule), the activation window in UTC, and a one-line reason where the source provides it.
- Active later today — pulsing dashed border. The popup shows the upcoming window so you can plan timing.
- Inactive — thin outline only. Still on the chart for orientation, but visually de-emphasised so it doesn't compete with the active layer.
- Hover any polygon for source attribution: this is where you confirm whether the zone is NOTAMed, AUPed, scheduled, or some combination. The system never hides a possibly-active zone just because one source is missing — when in doubt, it errs toward showing.
AIRAC vs activation — a common confusion
Pilots sometimes conflate the AIRAC cycle with airspace activation. They are not the same thing. The AIRAC cycle is the 28-day Eurocontrol-published refresh of airspace structure — geometry, classification, altitude bands, frequencies. Activation, by contrast, can change minute-by-minute via NOTAM or hour-by-hour via AUP.
An airspace can exist on the chart for years (no AIRAC change) but flip from inactive to active in seconds when a NOTAM is published. The reverse also holds: an AIRAC update may re-classify or resize an existing zone, but the activation rhythm follows its own clock.
Practical implication: do not assume an AIP that says "active Mon–Fri 0700–1900" overrides a same-day NOTAM extending the window to 2100. Getting the most out of DYNAM
DYNAM compresses a 15–20 minute brief into under two. The shortlist of habits that keep it working as advertised:
- Keep the dimmed layer on. Inactive structure stays on the chart for orientation — turning it off can hide an airspace that activates after takeoff.
- Read overlapping activations. One zone can be active via NOTAM and AUP simultaneously, sometimes with different time windows. The popup shows both sources side by side.
- Re-run close to departure. A UUP can revise the day mid-morning. If your flight window is >2 hours away, re-check DYNAM closer to wheels-up.
- Treat times as UTC. Almost every European NOTAM and AUP entry is published in UTC. Convert before comparing to local watch time.

A pre-flight DYNAM workflow that takes under two minutes:
- Open the live map and centre it on your departure airfield.
- Switch Live mode on. The map re-shades immediately to show today's activation state.
- Run a route briefing for your planned corridor or a radius briefing for a local flight.
- Tap any active or upcoming zone on the map to confirm source attribution and time window.
- Re-check 30 minutes before takeoff for UUPs that may have shifted the picture.
