Graphical NOTAMs Explained for European VFR Pilots

NOTAMs describe areas. A map shows them. Graphical NOTAMs put the effect area on the chart so pilots stop translating Q-line coordinates by hand.

A NOTAM you can see

A graphical NOTAM is any NOTAM whose textual description can be reduced to a polygon, a circle, or a corridor on a map. Instead of leaving the pilot to translate a string of coordinates and radii into mental geometry, the system draws the effect area directly onto the chart.

The shorthand: graphical NOTAMs draw restrictions directly on the map — shape, position, extent at a glance. That single change is the difference between scanning a 60-page PIB looking for the one notice that intersects your route, and seeing four red shapes on a map you were already reading.

Graphical NOTAMs are especially valuable for temporary restrictions, danger areas, airshow zones, military activity, crane warnings near airfields, and any other notice that describes a place or area rather than an event at a fixed point.

Why text alone is hard

Open any European NOTAM PIB and the language quickly turns surveying. A typical line reads AREA BOUNDED BY: 510930N 0045200E - 511230N 0050100E - 510800N 0050800E - 510400N 0044900E - 510930N 0045200E. SFC-FL095. That's five coordinates and a vertical band. To know whether it affects you, you have to plot it.

Even short NOTAMs come with surprising spatial complexity. A 5 NM radius around an aerodrome looks simple — until the aerodrome is near a Class D boundary and your route just clips the edge. A multi-leg corridor restriction along a parade route doesn't render in your head the way it renders on the map.

The cost of text-only briefing isn't comprehension — pilots can decode a coordinate string. The cost is cognitive load. Every translation step is energy spent on geometry instead of on flying. Graphical NOTAMs return that energy to the pilot.

Where the geometry comes from

Graphical NOTAMs aren't a separate publication. They are derived from the same NOTAM text any AIS authority publishes — just parsed and drawn rather than left as prose.

Three sources feed the geometry:

  • Q-line coordinates — the structured Q-line at the top of every ICAO-format NOTAM contains a reference point and a radius. Adequate for circular notices.
  • Item E text parsing — Item E is the narrative body. For NOTAMs that describe a polygon, the coordinates inside the narrative can be extracted programmatically.
  • AIXM digital NOTAMs — the modern format used by some publishing authorities, where the geometry is structured XML rather than narrative text. AIXM-format NOTAMs render natively.

A worked example: airshow over the Tyrrhenian

Concrete scenario: a NOTAM is published for a coastal airshow at LIRN Naples on a Saturday afternoon. The narrative text describes a temporary restricted area shaped like a wedge extending offshore, surface to FL080, active 1330–1700Z.

Without a graphical NOTAM, a pilot transiting along the Tyrrhenian coast at FL065 has to: read the Item E text, decode four coordinates, mentally project them onto the chart, and decide whether their planned track at FL065 intersects the wedge. With a coastal route that runs parallel to the boundary, the answer is non-obvious.

With a graphical NOTAM, the wedge appears as a red shape on the map. The pilot sees that their planned track clips the eastern edge of the polygon, and either re-routes 5 NM offshore or shifts altitude to FL095 to clear the upper limit. The decision takes seconds, not minutes — and it's verifiable by looking, not by trusting the mental projection.

Not every NOTAM is graphical

Some NOTAMs describe events that don't have a spatial extent in any useful sense. A runway closure is point-bound to an airport. A frequency change at a tower applies to whoever's on that frequency. A SIGMET-style hazard advisory may apply to a FIR or sector but not to a specific drawable polygon.

Graphical NOTAMs and DYNAM

Graphical NOTAMs and DYNAM work together. A graphical NOTAM gives you the where — the shape on the map. DYNAM gives you the when — whether that shape is active right now, scheduled for later, or already expired.

Combined, you get a visual hierarchy that scales: every active graphical NOTAM is bold, every upcoming one is dashed, every expired one is hidden. Pilots see only what matters for the flight window. Combined with DYNAM, you only see what's active today.

Working with graphical NOTAMs efficiently

A few habits that keep the workflow fast:

  • Tap polygons that clip your track. The shape gets you to the right NOTAMs fast; the underlying Item E carries the nuance (vertical bands, exceptions, reporting requirements) for the few that actually matter.
  • Check the time window first. A graphical NOTAM with a short window can have a big visual footprint that doesn't matter for a flight 90 minutes later. The B) and C) timestamps are in the popup.
  • Coastal and oceanic boundaries can be approximate. The polygon is a faithful render of the source text — when the text itself is rough, the shape inherits that roughness.
  • Don't skip point NOTAMs. A runway closure is a point NOTAM but matters more than most polygons if it's your destination.
